SDP Orientation

As of 4/1/2026, The Self Determination Program orientation has been standardized across California to ensure consistency for all participants.

  • The State Council of Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) is now the ONLY approved provider of the SDP orientation statewide. Regional Centers will NO longer host their own orientations.

  • The orientation is now a two-part live virtual series via Zoom.

Part A: Must be completed first and covers the basics and principles of SDP.

Part B: Must provide Certificate of Completion for Part A to access Part B. Focuses on budget management, spending plans, and financial management systems (FMS)

Each session is 2 hours long (4 hours total)

  • Individuals must complete BOTH parts and receive certificates for each before they can begin transitioning or enrolling in the program. This includes starting a Person Centered Plan.

Certificates must be submitted to the Regional Center and IF (if you choose to use one) before beginning services

  • If an individual completed their orientation BEFORE April 1, 2026, or is already enrolled in SDP, they are not required to take this new orientation.

  • To reduce disparities, the new standardized training is available in multiple languages including Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Vietnamese, Tagalog, Korean, Hmong, Farsi, Armenian, Arabic, and ASL.
